Zantus Nel - Game Student Journey #1

Follow Zantus Nel, a student in the Game and Interactive Media Development Course 2026, on his student journey and his experiences in class. Zantus wrote this journal for us to share his story and thoughts with you.

I started studying in February 2026.

We started with Game Design Theory Basics. This was our first week and I was very excited.

We learned and discussed what games are and how they work. We then also went over some terminologies, some I knew and some I heard for the first time.

It was fun for me to be around other people like me.

We then learned about the game design pyramid. I first was a bit confused and too shy to ask but luckily for me we were sorted into teams and made our own game idea based on the game pyramid principle. The exercise’s outline was that the location had to be Kalk Bay and tourists should learn about the village and what there is to see.

At first, I was scared to talk but the discord group made it easier for me to communicate. The others in my team also described the pyramid to me again and I was very thankful.

Our team's idea was a game called ‘Seal the deal’. After class I wanted to work on something for the team so I made a potential logo for our game. I was, that is just me, scared to share it but when I did everyone actually liked it.

The presentation of our game idea had a challenge for us: everyone in our group was too shy and we needed someone to do it, luckily Mieke, one of our team, said she would do it.

After the presentations by all the teams it was awesome to see how every team went their own way with the same location.

This first week was very inspirational and fun.
