Zantus Nel - Game Student Journey #2

Follow Zantus Nel, a student in the Game and Interactive Media Development Course 2026, on his student journey and his experiences in class. Zantus wrote this journal for us to share his story and his thoughts with you. In this journal entry he is talking about their first weeks of learning 3D modelling.

This week we started with an introduction to Blender, the 3D modelling software.

I already had some Blender knowledge going into the course and am familiar with some of the basic approaches but I learned so much that i never knew just from that introduction.

Then after learning the very basics of how to use the program and how 3D models are made we did our first exercise: make a low polygon house.

Our next exercises were a chess piece, a low polly R2D2, and a chair.

Then we got to test our newly learned skills on a different task. We were given reference images and we could pick which ones we wanted to do and I picked a clock.

Juat to get some additional practice and because I love 3D modelling I did a personal project: a funko pop of our lecturer.

We ended our week off by making a lego character. It was fun to implement our skills and to learn how to work with a time limit. I was used to spending a lot of time on projects but I was glad to learn how to manage my time for projects better.

For a personal project I took our R2D2 we made and used everything we learned to make the most realistic version I could.

I was, as usual, very hesitant to show my work but thanks to our lecturer, who encouraged me to go for it, I did share it with the other students and they liked what I created. I felt so happy thanks to how supportive everyone was and it helped me be a bit more confident with my work.

I then talked with some of the others that were in my team with the game design pyramid project from previous weeks and took the drawing of one of my fellow students and I used everything we learned about 3D modelling to make her 2 drawings into 3d models.

You can see the models I created in the image collage posted in this article.
