Kirwin v. Niekerk, Game 2023

Kirwin v. Niekerk studied Game and Interactive Media at the academy in 2023. After that he joined the Alumni team of that year during the work on the District Six Museum's VR project and the Game Production Incubator working on Amanzi. He is now one with the UWC Innovation Hub working on VR and AR projects as part of a one year internship programme.

1. When and why did you study at the academy?

I was part of the Game and Interactive Media course in 2023. I’ve always loved games and I’ve always been interested in how games are made and ADA opened my eyes to game development in South Africa.

2. Where are you now?

I’m currently doing a one year internship at the UWC Innovation Hub where we focus on VR and AR projects for education and training which is a great next step from the work I did on the District Six Museum VR project I did at ADA.

3. What is the most important thing you took away from studying at the academy?

The most important thing I took away was teamwork and communication. ADA taught me the importance of collaborating and working with other people and I use those valuable lessons today. At ADA we were encouraged to think out of the box and be creative.

4. What would you recommend to young students?

I would say to young students, don’t be afraid to learn new things and step out of your comfort zone. I think it’s the best way to grow, not only as a creative, but as a person as well.
